Tysabri - Linked to Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy (PML)
Tysabri, a drug used for treatment for multiple sclerosis made by Biogen Idec and Elan. Tysabri helps to prevent episodes of symptoms and slow the worsening of disability in patients with relapsing forms (course of disease where symptoms flare up from time to time) of multiple sclerosis (MS). Per recent medical studies, Tysabri is linked to causing a serious brain infection called progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy, or PML. According to the FDA, the longer Tysabri is used, the higher the risk for contracting PML. PML attacks the brain and central nervous system and is usually fatal. Symptoms include vision problems, loss of coordination, and memory loss. Patients who survive the disease are often permanently disabled. In Feb. 2011 the FDA reported that 102 cases of Tysabri PML have been reported among 82,732 patients treated with Tysabri use worldwide. Later in 2011, the FDA issued new Tysabri Gudielines to Heathcare Professionals. (See:Tysabri PML Dear Doctor Letter- April 20, 2011)

Tysabri Side Effects
According to medical reports, Tysabri / Natalizumab may cause serious allergic reactions that are most likely to happen within 2 hours after the beginning of an infusion, but may happen at any time during the Tysabri infusion treatment. Tysabri patients are required to stay at the infusion center for 1 hour after their infusion is finished. A doctor or nurse monitors the Tysabri patient during this time to see if you are having a serious reaction to the medication. It is very important that the Tysabri patient tell the doctors if they experience any unusual symptoms especially if they occur within 2 hours after the start of your infusion.
